The more we rely on computers, the more we rely on what powers them: electricity. After listening to Now (a PBS news show and podcast), about clean coal, I am starting to think that perhaps the flexibility of being digital has been overstated. Our love of technology may be creating an environment that proves worse than a life without them. Are we inheriting more problems than the relationship is worth? Kind of like a capable but abusive spouse?
Sure, you are having experiences unimaginable and are truly devoted, but is the person unselfish, supportive; always looking out for your best interest? Can one ever truly satisfy an "easy" girl? A gold-digger (Or for the ladies, a Player)? Really, the cost of sustaining our habits may prove more costly than the pleasures we receive from them.
Thankfully there are alternative energy sources (wind, solar) and only time will tell how far that will impact things. Perhaps one could argue that we are in a transition phase, as I believe was mentioned on a Buzz Out Loud episode. Still, looking at History, I am pessimistic that mankind alone has the power to bring about the change needed to make best use of the tech he wrapped himself around in.
