Let's travel back in time... Dr. Who! Please press the button. Which one? Oh, I don't know... Whichever one works, I suppose. Yes, that should work fine. Thanks.
Here we are! Back in the 1990's (U Can't Touch This) Yes, in the early '90s I would definitely classify myself as a hardcore gamer. I had every major system in the North American market that my parents and my allowance (OK, parents again) could afford. Yeah, I was spoiled. Nevertheless I had good grades, kept my room clean and stayed out of jail. What else could a parent want from a 12-13 year old kid? Be it journals, a mock radio show "sponsored" by game companies (influenced by skits on Video Power, 1st season), or even managing a 1-2 mile trek to play the latest games at a friend's house: Video games and exercising were a way of life for me (look for my DVD and motivational mp3's shortly). I even had my own lunchtime video game quiz-show in the cafeteria of my junior-high school (also inspired by Video Power). Thankfully, I grew up.
Indeed, Dr. Who. I agree. Looking back, that kind of scares me too. What's that? This is where I get off? Are you ser–All right! All right! If that's how you want it, fine!
Pardon me (dusting myself off). Let me get my bearings. Getting thrown out of a time traveling elevator can be quite jarring, you know? Now, in the present 21st century, significant life re-prioritization, hard times and a family have worn off any medals "earned" from my years in the pixelated trenches. Nevertheless, I have endeavored to keep abreast of the latest changes in the video game industry. With such habits it was only a matter of time before I would eventually come across the torch bearers of this current generation: Sony's PS3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
The PS3 seems to have the power, the Xbox 360 definitely has the giant to back it, but the Nintendo Wii... The Nintendo Wii feels to me altogether different. It has the passion of a stallion, the wisdom of a grandfather and the playful heart of a child. It has been the only next generation console I had even remotely pondered purchasing. Based on reviews and sponsored videos, nothing seemed to perform like a Wii. Most of all, nothing seemed to affect players like the Wii. Affectation, that is the goal of every good designer, I believe. Indeed, this veteran has been intrigued. Very intrigued. The question now is, what would it be like for me to play the Wii? Would my family enjoy playing it as well? Time shall be our confidant. Time shall be our publicist.
